Many of us secretly feel that we could be doing great things, if only we knew what it was we really are supposed to be doing.  We get frustrated, because it often seems as if our life isn’t going anywhere.

We feel like we’re on a treadmill, but we don’t know if we are getting any closer to success.  We don’t even know what success really means.  Sometimes the reason we feel like we aren’t getting anywhere is because we are afraid to imagine doing what we really want.

Sometimes our inner idea of success is very different from what society views as success.  That is why we can get tired of being on a treadmill going nowhere.  We may need to really explore what success truly means to us.

Is true success having a high position and lots of power?  That is how a lot of people define success.  Yet this particular definition of success never appealed to me.  I became puzzled, because I thought to myself, “How can I become successful when all the models of success are things that I’m not really attracted to?”

When I was young, my ideas of success were more romantic and artistic.  I wanted to be a famous artist, or writer.  I wanted to have a lot of adventure and I wanted to have a lot of friends.  I wanted a happy romantic life and true love.  A loving family.  I wanted to understand the meaning and purpose of life on a really deep level.

So, have I achieved success on my own terms?  Not completely, but I did point my life in the direction of those things that were important to me.  I know now that if I had simply tried to get money or power, I would not have felt successful.

Does that mean that my definition of success is right and that all those other people who want to achieve money and power are wrong?  No, I truly believe that following our goals in life is somewhat of a sacred quest.  We may have an inner vision of our successful selves that is very different from what the world imagines for us.

We ignore our inner greatness at our peril.
