It’s a mysterious fact of life that sometimes the people with the most intelligence don’t always succeed in life. Very often, people who have very high IQ’s end up underperforming, and never achieve the great potential they could have achieved.
At the same time, we have all seen people who are less gifted intellectually who go on to achieve great things. Sometimes these results may appear to be very unfair to the person who is gifted.
Why do some people who are very gifted intellectually end up never accomplishing anything? Why are some very successful people not particularly smart?
It turns out that intelligence is only one of the many factors that is required for success. A high IQ is a great thing to have, but intelligence by itself is not enough to guarantee success. That is why you often see people who have very high IQ’s who never seem to accomplish very much in life, despite having the advantage of high intelligence.
People who have very high intelligence often enjoy the process of thinking and learning, but they don’t always have the knowledge of how to transform their ideas into something in the real world. In fact, very smart people may enjoy using their intellect so much that they don’t feel any need to be successful.
To be successful in the every day world, you need a few other abilities. You need to know how to plan a project, how to get backing from other people for your project, how to modify your project as you go along, and you need to be able to persist until you are successful.
These other qualities such as persistence, creativity, vision, and leadership, do not necessarily go with high intelligence. If you don’t already have these qualities, it may be useful for you to develop them.
In addition to having these qualities mentioned above, successful people also require self confidence and inner drive. Some people who are very intelligent may try to take an intellectual approach to solving all the emotional and social problems in their lives. This doesn't work.
If you want to become very successful, you can benefit from improving your knowledge and intelligence, but you should also improve your creativity, your problem solving techniques, your desire for success, and your ability to work with others. You will have to be able to believe in yourself and in your dream, even when others around you don’t seem to believe in you. You will also need the ability to recognize when you are on the wrong track and you need to know how to correct your path to take you towards success.
All of these other human qualities that are required for success are something that IQ tests can’t really measure.
If you have been less successful than you would like, it can be useful to try to identify what you should try to change. Should you work on improving your intelligence, or your creativity? Do you need more self confidence, or are you already too self confident?
Are you too sensitive or not sensitive enough?
Besides trying to understand your weaknesses, it’s a good idea to also understand your personal strengths.
