The more I learn about how our minds work, the more amazed I am at how powerful our minds are, and what they can do.
For example, our mind can be trained to think in a very logical manner. This ability for our mind to be logical means that humans can be great at solving problems. This is particularly true when we are dealing with problems that are mathematical or scientific nature. Being logical is a great asset in solving these kinds of problems.
Even though our minds can be used in a very logical way, a logical approach isn’t always the best way to solve a problem. Throughout history, the solutions to complex scientific problems have sometimes been revealed in a mysterious manner.
The history of science is filled with examples of complex problems that were solved by using creativity and dreaming instead of logic.
For example, long before scientists knew much about how atoms fit together to make different kinds of matter, a German chemist named Kekule had spent years trying to figure out the structure of a molecule named benzene.
One day while he was daydreaming, Kekule had a vision of a snake swallowing its tail. When he awoke, he realized that the molecule of benzene must be made up of atoms that formed a ring, much like the image he had mentally seen of the snake.
The problem had been solved when Kekule allowed his conscious mind to relax and his subconscious imagination took over.
Even Albert Einstein, the most famous theoretical physicist of our time, did not use his logical mind to come up with all his theories about the nature of the universe. Instead, Einstein came to understand the nature of light and space in a deeper way by using his imagination, and not by using mathematical formulas.
If even scientists find that using creativity and imagination are helpful in solving problems, we can also expand the way we use our minds.
If you currently try to understand and solve everything by using your logical mind, why not allow yourself to become more playful and creative? Why not look for answers in other ways?
If you try to understand the world through logic, realize that sometimes the world can also be better understood through symbols and dreams.
Why can we sometimes get an answer to problems showing up in our dreams? The reason is because sometimes our conscious mind keeps us from seeing the answer to an important question.
There are many examples of people besides Kekule who received solutions to problems while they were dreaming. Why not practice using your dreams to solve some of your problems tonight?
