It is normal to be anxious before you have to speak in public. In fact this is actually the number one fear people have.
More people are afraid of speaking in public than of dying. This means that it isn't anything abnormal to have some public speaking anxiety. The trick is to learn to work around it so that you can give a good speech when you need to.
First of all, you really will be less anxious if you are very familiar with the material that you are presenting. This means you should practice your speech until you can give it easily.
Bring cue cards if it helps you to feel a bit less anxious, but know your speech as well.
Another way to help yourself get over public speaking anxiety is to face your fear and practice. Join a Toastmasters group and you will get lots of opportunities.
They will teach you what to do and what not to do and as you learn the proper way to go about it you might start to be less anxious as you gain more experience.
It might be a good idea to actually learn some relaxation tips so that you can help yourself to get over some of that public speaking anxiety before you get on the stage. If you are less nervous it will be easier to do your speech.
Sometimes it also helps if you practice visualization techniques.
Before going in front of the group imagine yourself giving your speech and having it go perfectly. This really can help. However, keep in mind that everyone makes mistakes, and nobody will think badly of you if you just correct yourself and move on.
You might even be able to make a little joke about it and get everyone laughing with you as you become more familiar with public speaking.
Some people also find it helpful to get to the location early and get familiar with the location so that you know what to expect.
It can be less daunting if you have a chance to walk around and know where you will be speaking and where the audience will be sitting, as well as where any lights might be. You can even take the opportunity to say hi to some of the audience members so they will seem more like friends when you make your speech.
Use these strategies and very soon you too could command the stage as a confident public speaker.
