Many of us are very busy trying to chase success. At the same time, we are also trying very hard to avoid failure. Failure is a topic that often churns up a lot of very negative emotions in us. When we fail at anything, we may tell ourselves that we are weak or stupid. We often feel humiliated when we fail.
We become so afraid of the possibility of failure that we may refuse to try again. We just give up.
One reason that we fear failure is because we are thinking about failure the wrong way. When we decide that failing at a goal means that we ourselves are failures, we confuse an outcome with our innermost selves. The truth is that we can fail and fail, and yet our innerself is not a failure.
We need to learn that lesson.
We will have better experiences if we can decide to treat failure as a form of feedback, or as a form of learning. There is a lot of learning we can get from every failure.
Here is an interesting article by Nicky VanValkenburgh on the topic of failure.
She points out in her article that failure is really a learning lesson. Failure has a lot to teach us, if we will let ourselves be open to its lessons.
All of us will have failures, that is guaranteed.
We need to find the best way to deal with the failures that come our way. That includes discovering the learning lesson in every failure.
It also means as Nicky VanValkenburgh points out, we can use mistakes and failure as a way to learn. We can use it to improve the way we take care of ourselves.

Recovery From Setbacks, Mistakes and Failure
By: Nicky VanValkenburgh
Ouch! It hurts when we make a mistake. It's embarrassing, and we wish that we could go back in time and do things differently. Sometimes, making mistakes makes us feel like giving up, throwing in the towel, and calling it a day. Do you ever feel like that?
It's easy to feel sorry for ourselves when things go wrong. However, we can also take the high road. We can pick ourselves up, be honest about what went wrong, and learn from the experience.
It's been said that “failure is the chance to begin again more intelligently."
When we discover what doesn't work, we're one step closer to finding something that's effective.
We may even do a little research (online or at the library) and see if there is a book or cd available on our subject matter. Instead of asking co-workers, friends and relatives.... get some information from an experienced expert. Go to Amazon.com or do a Google search. See what you can find. Finding out what someone else has done may give us some new ideas, fresh perspective, or new approach.
My friend, don't be discouraged during the difficult times. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
(1) What have I learned from this experience?
(2) What value can I find in it? (Hint: Look for something good or positive, in spite of what's happened)
(3) What will I do differently next time?
(4) What can I do now, in order to move forward, and get back on track?
(5) How can I get rid of my physical and emotional stress? (As you release tension, stress and anxiety from your body, then your mind becomes more alert and focused.)
(6) Can I get some physical exercise? (Spend an hour at the gym, go to a group fitness class, do some yoga, go for a walk, run or swim.)
It's important to take some time out for yourself to reflect and relax
Everyone experiences failure or setbacks from time to time. Don't shut the door on your dreams. Instead, open the door and keep moving forward. Keep on walking, and you'll eventually find yourself on the road to success.
