Do you have your own personal vision statement?

 

A personal vision statement is a statement that you create after you spend some time exploring who you are right now and who you want to be in the future.

 

Maybe you have thought that vision statements were something that businesses created when they were drawing up their business plan.

 

Actually, many people find it very useful to create a personal vision statement.

 

The time spent trying to define who you are exactly, and who you want to become in the future can be time well spent.  A personal vision statement is something that can transform your life! 

When you know what your own personal vision statement is, it helps you simplify many of the decisions you have to make along the way.  It helps you to clarify your path and your destiny. 

Every time you come to a fork in the road, every time you have a choice about something, you can compare the choices you have in front of you with the vision you have in your mind for yourself.  A vision statement can help you find where you have gone off track in your life. 

When you need to make a choice in the future, your vision statement can guide you.  

 

You will be able to ask yourself, “Does this decision fit in with the kind of person I want to be?  Does it fit with who I am right now?  Does it fit with where I want to go in my life, with what I want to accomplish?”

 

A personal vision statement, properly drafted, can help you make better life decisions about such matters as what jobs you apply for and accept, where you choose to live, who you choose to marry, and the way you treat the people in your life.

 

Taking the time to work out a personal vision statement can reveal where you may be losing your way in the present.

 

So, how do we go about creating a personal vision statement for ourselves?

 

How do you decide who you really are?  Where do you start?  What do you ask?

 

This journey is different for each of us.  Some of us are very reflective, but some of us are not.

 

There is a part of each of us that is essential, our essence in fact, and that is a part that is deep and never changes.  It is timeless.  Then there is a part of us that is exploring and changing all the time as we interact with life.  This is the part of us that we can create and mold.

 

When we develop a personal vision statement, we need to take into account the part of us that never changes, as well as the part of us that changes constantly. 

 

Start by asking yourself some questions and waiting for an answer.  Who are you right now?  Who do you want to be in the future?  What do you want to be doing five years from now?  Ten?  What would you like to have written in your obituary?

 

What would make you most proud to accomplish?  How do you want to feel in your future life?  Where would you live?  Who would you live with?  What does your work look like?  How do you spend your leisure time?

 

These are just some of the questions you can explore while you are developing your vision.

 

Start writing out some of the answers that come to you.  Keep searching and keep simplifying.  Look for a common thread.

 

What would you need to change in your present life, and in the near future to get closer to the vision you hold for yourself?

 

A good personal vision statement can give new focus to your life.  It will change the way you make decisions in the future. It’s a way to re-acquaint yourself with deeper self, with some of the dreams that you may have given up on.

 

Your vision statement can provide a glimpse into the life you really wanted, and the person you really wanted to be.

 

Does your life right now fall short of the vision you have for yourself?  Are you on the right path?  Is your current path taking you even further away from where you wanted to be?
