Recovery From Setbacks, Mistakes and Failure

By: Nicky VanValkenburgh

Ouch! It hurts when we make a mistake. It's embarrassing, and we wish that we could go back in time and do things differently. Sometimes, making mistakes makes us feel like giving up, throwing in the towel, and calling it a day. Do you ever feel like that?

It's easy to feel sorry for ourselves when things go wrong. However, we can also take the high road. We can pick ourselves up, be honest about what went wrong, and learn from the experience.

It's been said that “failure is the chance to begin again more intelligently."

When we discover what doesn't work, we're one step closer to finding something that's effective.

We may even do a little research (online or at the library) and see if there is a book or cd available on our subject matter. Instead of asking co-workers, friends and relatives.... get some information from an experienced expert. Go to Amazon.com or do a Google search. See what you can find. Finding out what someone else has done may give us some new ideas, fresh perspective, or new approach.

My friend, don't be discouraged during the difficult times. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

(1) What have I learned from this experience?

(2) What value can I find in it? (Hint: Look for something good or positive, in spite of what's happened)

(3) What will I do differently next time?

(4) What can I do now, in order to move forward, and get back on track?

(5) How can I get rid of my physical and emotional stress? (As you release tension, stress and anxiety from your body, then your mind becomes more alert and focused.)

(6) Can I get some physical exercise? (Spend an hour at the gym, go to a group fitness class, do some yoga, go for a walk, run or swim.)

It's important to take some time out for yourself to reflect and relax.

Everyone experiences failure or setbacks from time to time. Don't shut the door on your dreams. Instead, open the door and keep moving forward. Keep on walking, and you'll eventually find yourself on the road to success.
