Do you ever wish you had a better memory? Many of us occasionally get frustrated when our memory doesn’t work as well as we should. We forget the names of people we recently met, or we forget important phone numbers, or we can’t remember where we put an item we just set down a minute ago.
The truth is, that everybody’s memory has occasional glitches when things don’t work quite right. Most of the time, these little glitches in our memory are not the sign of anything seriously wrong. As we get older, the memory glitches become more common as some of our brain’s processing ability slows down.
Still, as long as our brain remains healthy, we can continue to learn new information and retrieve it effectively. Sometimes, when we are going through periods of stress, our mental performance will suffer. Our creativity and our ability to remember will start to erode. We can often improve our brain’s ability to remember by learning a few simple memory tricks.
But it's important to realize that no memory tricks will work if your brain health is impaired. Memory tips don't help if your circulation is poor, or if you are under too much stress and can't sleep properly at night.
That is why every step you take to improve your ability to learn and remember should also be accompanied by a sincere effort to improve your brain health, and the health of your body as well.
Why should we look after our health if we want to improve our memory? Remember that your brain is very much affected by such health factors as the quality of your diet, the amount of stress in your life, the quality of your relationships, and the amount of good sleep you get. If you start to notice problems with how your memory works, these are some factors you should check out first.
You can often improve your memory by mastering a few trickes such as repeating out loud some of the information you have learned. Repetition will help encode new experiences and facts into the memory. That is why it is useful and effective to repeat the name of a person you have just met a few times so the information is more solidly encoded in the brain. Saying something out loud also sends a signal to the brain that the information is important.
Your brain tries to remember those things that are important to your survival, and it tries to forget the things that don’t seem very important. This leaves more room for remembering the important stuff.
