When we are young, most of us never pay any attention to our occasional lapses of memory. When we are young, we just laugh off those occasions when we are forgetful. We don’t start to worry that one experience of being forgetful means we are getting Alzheimer’s disease.
As we get older, we often start to notice problems with our memories that worry us. We become fearful that our brains are starting to lose our ability to remember. This can be terrifying when it happens. If you lose the functioning of your brain, you also lose your personal identity and the learning you have amassed during your lifetime.
Even if your loss of memory is quite mild and never progresses to a serious brain disease like Alzheimers it’s still upsetting to notice memory lapses that become more and more frequent.
To keep our memory working well, we need to learn how to look after our brain. Our brain is the most complicated object we will ever encounter. We need to keep it as healthy as possible so it can continue to do all its important jobs such as thinking and remembering.
Fortunately we are living at a time when scientists are starting to discover what kinds of factors help the brain remember better. Some of these memory improvement factors involve the way that you think and learn. And some of these memory improvement factors involve what you eat, how you work and play, and the sorts of nutritional supplements you take.
Health food stores and magazines are filled with ads about the latest product that may help you to preserve and protect your brain power. Is all the hype about brain enhancement products true? Are these supplements truly effective?
It’s important to know that we are just at the beginning of researching which nutritional products may or may not help the brain.
Researchers often discover that a supplement may show very promising results when tested on mice in a laboratory, but they don't know if it will work on humans.
Sometimes you will read that a particular supplement has shown a 20% or 30 % improvement in memory, but you don’t really find out how that study was done. It may have been done with a very small group of ten or twelve test subjects who were only followed for a period of two weeks by someone who was a first year university student. Such a study is too small and too short to tell us anything conclusive.
How can you tell whether the studies that show a particular supplement really works were adequately tested? In most cases, as a lay person, you would simply not have access to information that told you whether the studies were properly done or not. So you have to be careful when deciding which supplements to take to boost your memory.
The following article by Mike Stevens lists some of the reasons why our memory systems may start to fail, and suggests various supplements that may help slow down or stop the sort of memory decline that is often associated with aging.

What are the Causes of Memory Loss and Can it be Prevented?
By: Mike Stevens
If you are experiencing forgetfulness, it is important to identify the causes of memory loss and to take appropriate action.
Memories are precious commodities, worth guarding at all costs. Everything we achieve in life—our relationships, our skills, our triumphs and successes—is measured by our ability of recall. We have a storehouse of memories that we draw on to evaluate who we are, where we came from, and where we are going. Our brains furnish us with memories of loved ones and remind of those things in life that mean the most to us.
Our brains furnish us with memories of loved ones and remind of those things in life that mean the most to us. But, what happens when memories start to fade or slip away? How can we protect our mind’s storehouse? The saying: “There’s no time like the present,” takes on particular significance when it comes to safeguarding our most precious asset, our memory.
A common problem that many have experienced is short term memory loss. This condition can be particularly frustrating for the sufferer, resulting in much time spent trying to locate lost car keys, glasses, drinking cups, or pens. How embarrassing to forget someone’s name seconds after meeting them! Research provides surprising and important insights into the causes of short term memory loss.
It is important to recognize that, over time, we begin to lose brain cells. Our body also starts to make less of the chemicals needed by the brain. This is a process that occurs as we grow older.
There are other causes of memory loss or decline. Chemical imbalances may affect cognitive functioning; environmental and food pollutants may be culprits. Not to be overlooked is the fact that nutritional deficiencies play a significant role in transient memory.
All of these factors may result in the brain being starved for essential nutrients. Modern nutritional supplements incorporate natural ingredients that address the causes of memory loss, providing or feeding the brain with crucial substances that can repair damage, slow down further degeneration, and help the brain to start working as it should.
A nutritional supplement should include natural substances that are safe for the brain and that deliver essential nutrients needed for mental clarity, concentration, short-term memory and learning. A quality supplement will incorporate certain amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and co-factors; standardized herbal extracts, and specialty supplements.
Ingredients that may prove helpful for combating memory problems are: L-Tyrosine, B1, B3, Bacopin or Brahmi Leaf, Green Tea Extract, Gingko Biloba, Gotu Kola, Phosphatidyl Choline, DMAE, Phosphatidyl-L-Serine,Vinpocetine, and Ribonucleic Acid (RNA). If you are looking for a supplement, make sure to choose one containing these substances.
Quality nutritional supplements offer substantial benefits when it comes to brain function support, helping to counteract the causes of short term memory loss, providing speed of recall and mental clarity. They are analyzed for potency and tested and designed to support memory.
Supplements furnish us with nutrients from nature, substances to support and enhance brain functioning to help us to reach our full potential. We are not left in the dark when it comes to the causes of memory loss or what we can do to prevent and combat it. In fact, the light is brighter than ever, with the help of sophisticated natural supplements.
Mike Stevens has been studying the causes of memory loss and cognitive decline for years, and has written many articles on the subject. He is a regular contributor to Memory Enhancement Guide, a site discussing ways to enhance mental ability and prevent memory loss.
