Do you ever worry about memory loss? As the article below by author Greg Frost indicates, some causes of memory loss may be reversible.
For example, if your poor memory is caused by stress, then you can take steps to simplify your life and learn to relax. If too much stress is affecting your ability to remember, you should include more physical exercise in your daily routine, and you should take care to eat healthy meals, instead of a diet filled with high fat junk food.
However, not all memory loss is due simply to a slow down of our mental function as we age. In some cases, memory loss really is one of the early signs of a serious brain disease such as one of the various forms of dementia.
Dementia is a name given to a set of symptoms leading to a progressive decline in mental function. There are several types of dementia, such as vascular dementia, which is caused by small strokes or poor circulation of blood in the brain, dementia with Lewy bodies, and Pick’s disease. The most famous type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease.
When a person develops dementia, it can actually take a long time for doctors to make a correct diagnosis. In the early stages, a disease like Alzheimer’s disease may simply look like a harmless case of forgetfulness.
The type of harmless forgetfulness that comes with aging progresses very slowly and does not usually cause serious problems. However, with dementia, the outlook is tragically different. The forgetfulness and loss of mental abilities that come with dementias will progress quite quickly, and in a few years will destroy the mental abilities and personality of the person afflicted. From diagnosis to death may take only half a dozen years. At present, medical science has not yet discovered cures for these tragic afflictions.
Although the following article suggests that dementia can easily be diagnosed with a blood test and cured with a simple prescription for vitamins, the reality is much different.
Scientists and researchers are racing to develop better early tests for the various dementias, and of course, enormous sums of money are being spent trying to find ways to cure and prevent these devastating brain illnesses.
Some researchers into the field of healthy aging believe that making good lifestyle choices such as taking vitamin supplements, meditating, and getting plenty of physical and mental exercise can delay and perhaps prevent the development of dementias. There is as yet no definitive proof that lifestyle changes can forestall these serious brain diseases, so be sure to research the topic thoroughly and consult with a medical professional for advice.
