Are You Ready to Increase Your Vocabulary?

Why should you try to improve your vocabulary? Perhaps you are satisfied with the vocabulary you already have. Maybe you think you already know enough words.
Still, there are many good reasons to increase your word power. No matter how many words in the English language you already know, there are thousands and thousands of others just waiting to be discovered. Here are some reasons why it’s a good idea to keep on expanding your vocabulary no matter how many words you already know.
Every time you learn a new word, you increase your ability to speak more fluently. With a good vocabulary, you will express yourself better. You will be able to write better and you will increase your ability to express yourself verbally. Having a good vocabulary at your disposal can help you seem more intelligent to others, and can even help you in your career.
When you improve your word power, you will also be able to understand more. When you have a bigger vocabulary, those books and articles that formerly seemed too difficult to understand will now reveal their meaning to you.
If you have made the decision to improve your vocabulary, what is the best way to go about it? Should you start reading the dictionary? Should you take some sort of classes, or get a set of CD’s that teach you new words?
All of these can be excellent methods to improve your vocabulary.
Since every person has a slightly different learning style, what works for someone else might not be the way that works best for you.
One easy way to increase your vocabulary is to start reading books and articles that are just a bit more difficult than what you can read easily. Look for articles that have just a few words that you don’t understand.
When you come across a new word, take a good look at it and see the way this new word is used in the sentence. Does this word remind you of any other words you already know?
In English, many words have common roots. When a word reminds you of a word that you know already, it might have a meaning that is related to the word you know.
Also, check the entire sentence. Can you figure out what the word might mean based on the meaning of the sentence? Very often you may be able to guess the meaning of the word by looking at what the rest of the sentence says.
You should try both these methods of trying to figure out the meaning of a new word before you go running to a dictionary.
Why should consulting a dictionary be your last resort when you are trying to understand the meaning of a new word?
When you look at a new word and compare it mentally with the words that are already in your mind, and when you use the other method of trying to get the meaning of a new word by looking at the entire sentence, you are giving your brain a good workout.
By making your brain do something that is just a little bit difficult for it, you will be creating new connections between your brain cells that previously didn’t exist. The more connections there are between your brain cells, the better your brain will work when you want to think and create.
Improving your vocabulary is an important part of becoming smarter.
