Easy Ways to Improve Your Vocabulary

Do you want to have a good vocabulary?  Having a good vocabulary means that you know a lot of words.  When you have a good vocabulary, you not only know the meaning of a lot of words, but you also know how to use those words to communicate effectively with others.

In the English language, there are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of words you can use in your vocabulary.  Even if you add just a thousand more words to your vocabulary each year, you can get lots of benefits.

Why should we bother to try to expand our vocabulary? One good reason to improve vocabulary is that when we understand more words and concepts, we can understand the world around us better.  We understand ourselves better too when we expand our vocabulary.

Most people only know a few thousand words that they use every day.  They have a limited vocabulary.  When you limit your vocabulary, you also limit yourself in life.

When people have a poor vocabulary, they don’t express themselves well.  They don’t sound very smart, and they don’t impress other people.

By improving vocabulary, it helps us to express our thoughts more clearly to others.  When we know more words, we have a bigger bank of words and expressions we can call on.  Every new word we learn helps us to expand our mind.  Every new word we learn entices our mind to stretch into new areas.

Improving your word power also helps you to improve your brain power.

When we understand more words and have a bigger vocabulary, we can also improve our ability to think and express ourselves.  We have more choices for the words we use when we talk and write. When we have a bigger vocabulary, our thinking and our speech will become more expressive.  We will appear more intelligent and thoughtful to others.

Having a bigger vocabulary can even affect our career success. In the modern world the ability to use words effectively is often highly rewarded.

If you want to improve your vocabulary, should you simply try to learn new words directly from a dictionary?

The answer is yes, if you happen to enjoy reading the dictionary.  Reading the dictionary to learn new words can be an excellent way to improve your word power.  But this method is not for everybody.

If you hate reading the dictionary, this is not the right method to improve your word power.  If you find it really boring to read the dictionary, you should look for other methods to improve your vocabulary that will work better for you.

One good way to improve your vocabulary is to start reading books and articles that are just a little bit more difficult than what you are used to.

When you come across a new word that you don’t know, see if you can figure out its meaning from the context. Look at the way the word is made up, with its letters and syllables. Does it remind you of any words you already know? What parts of it are familiar?

You can often figure out the meaning of the new word from the way the syllables are put together and the way the word is used in the sentence.  If you still can’t figure it out, check the new word in a dictionary.

Sometimes you don’t have a dictionary handy.  What if you’re at a lecture or if you’re having a conversation with somebody, and you hear a word that you’re not familiar with?

Many people are too embarrassed to admit when they don’t know the meaning of a word, so they don’t ask for help.  They don’t ask to have the new word to be explained to them. They don’t want anyone to know that they have a poor vocabulary.

If you don’t want to let others know when you don’t know the meaning of a new word, you can still add it to your vocabulary.  Just make a note of the new word, and look it up in a dictionary later.

If you are want to expand your vocabulary, how many new words should you try to learn each day? It’s up to you. Just learning two new words every day will add up to more than 7000 words in ten years.  In ten years, you would know an additional 36,000 words!
