Would you like to be able to read faster? How would your life be better if you could improve your reading speed?
Imagine getting through your study materials and your assignments in half the time! Wouldn’t you enjoy the benefit of having an improved reading speed? You might think that improving your reading speed is hard and will take a lot of time and work.
Actually, most people can easily double or triple their reading speed if they simply learn to eliminate bad reading habits. You may have these bad reading habits yourself and not know it. By reading this article you can discover how to easily improve your reading speed.
One bad reading habit many people have is trying to read every single word that’s on the page. You’ll be able to read much faster if you train your eyes to sweep across entire phrases and sentences, instead of slowing down to look at every single word.
If you stop at every single word while you’re reading, you will suffer from poor reading speed and poor reading comprehension. Reading every word separately will interfere with your ability to absorb the meaning of the entire sentence.
If you train yourself to look at entire phrases at once, instead of trying to read every single word, you will actually understand the content better.
So remember, if you want to improve your reading speed as well as improve your reading comprehension, let your eyes sweep across entire phrases and sentences, and don’t slow down to take in each word separately.
Here’s another very common bad reading habit you should get rid of if you want to improve your reading speed. This bad reading habit is called “sub-vocalization”.
Sub-vocalization means that while you are reading, you are sounding out the words to yourself in your mind. This bad reading habit is very common and it will slow you down your reading speed a lot. The habit of sub-vocalization slows down your reading speed because your brain can take in and process what you are reading much faster than you can sub-vocalize. Sounding out the words in your head is unnecessary and it’s a time waster.
You can actually read printed information and have the meaning of it enter your mind without moving your lips or sounding out the words in your head. To overcome the bad reading habit of sub-vocalization, make the effort to take in meaning from the printed page without hearing the words spoken in your mind.
Learning to read this way will probably require a lot of practice on your part, but you will improve your reading speed once you make this improved reading technique a habit.
A third very common bad reading habit is going back to re-read a line or phrase you’ve already read just because you think you may have missed a word. In many cases, going back to read the line again won’t really improve your understanding. And going back will slow you down. You could easily double your reading speed by simply training yourself not to go back and reread sentences again.
Here’s another tip to improve your reading speed: when you’re reading a column that’s not very wide, you don’t need to sweep your eyes across every line of print from left to right. Instead, practicing looking just at the center of the column and move your eyes down the column of print as you read.
If you’re serious about improving your reading speed, keep track of your words per minute score and see how it changes over time. If you push yourself to read faster you will eventually be able to improve your reading speed while still maintaining a high level of reading comprehension.
