Are IQ Tests Reliable?

By Royane Real Author of: How You Can Be Smarter - Use Your Brain to Learn Faster, Remember Better and Be More Creative You are probably familiar with the term “IQ test”. An IQ test is often used to measure the performance of children and young people relative to each other, especially in such areas as understanding language and logic, vocabulary, and arithmetic. IQ tests are used by educational institutions to channel students into various categories according to their intelligence scores as measured on these tests. The IQ test that is frequently used to measure intelligence is called the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test. The Stanford-Binet test is not the only intelligence test in use, but it is probably the best known. A person with an IQ score of 100 is considered to have average intelligence, whereas a person with an IQ score over 130 is said to be very gifted intellectually. Is the IQ score really an accurate way to measure intelligence? Not all researchers who study the topic of intelligence are convinced that IQ tests measure anything useful. In fact, there is a lot of criticism of IQ tests and the way the results of these tests are used. Some critics of IQ tests complain that IQ tests only measure a few very narrow kinds of intelligence. These critics say that intelligence is really much broader than what can be measured with IQ tests. These critics of IQ tests point out that other factors such as emotional intelligence, social intelligence, drive, and creativity are also required to succeed in life. Other critics complain that IQ tests are geared towards the kinds of knowledge that middle class people would have, and that people who grow up poor from other cultures will do poorly on these IQ tests because the tests are biased Do you know what your IQ score is? Do you know what that score really means? Before you get too worried about the implications of your own IQ score, you should know that many critics of the IQ test don’t think you should pay a lot of attention to the number. In fact, some critics of IQ tests say that the only thing that IQ tests can measure accurately is who will do well on IQ tests! There is plenty of evidence that people who score well on IQ tests don’t necessarily perform successfully in life, and many people who get an average IQ score are able to be very successful. Don’t let a low IQ score limit you, and don’t let a high IQ score lead you to think you can coast through life. Whether your IQ score is high, low, or average, you can always learn new ways to make your mind work more efficiently and creatively.
