Do you find it hard to meet new people? If you want to change your situation, the first thing you need to do is to figure out why you are having a hard time meeting people.
Are you just too busy? Are you working too hard?
Do you stay home too much, rarely going anywhere that people might be found? Or do you suffer from a lack of friends because you just haven’t discovered a way to interact with the people you encounter every day?
Do you live in a place where you can’t meet the kind of people who would interest you?
Or is your problem that you’re very shy or very introverted?
Most of us encounter new people fairly often. These people may be our customers and clients, our co-workers, people in our apartment block or neighbors on our street, or others that we meet in the course of the day. They may be friends, relatives or acquaintances of people we already know.
For most of us who are having difficulty in trying to make friends and start relationships, it isn’t the lack of people that is a problem. The problem is that of all the people that surround us, we don’t know how to start a new relationship or friendship. It’s like being surrounded by the ocean, and not having a drop of water that you can drink.
We don’t interact with the people we meet to start any real friendships or relationships.
Making new friends isn’t always easy. If you are stuck in a place where nobody is welcoming you with open arms, you will have to work a lot harder to try and find people who are willing to be your friend. But don’t give up. The worst thing you can do if you are living in a place where people don’t seem to be friendly is to give up and stay home.
If you want to make new friends you will have to adopt the mindset that potential friends are everywhere. You will have to keep going out among people, and keep trying to be friendly, even if it appears that at first you are not getting results.
It’s quite possible that you may encounter the same person a dozen times before a spark of friendship starts between the two of you. The chances of this happening are higher if you make the effort to smile and say hello at each encounter.
Sometimes you can speed up the process of meeting others by joining a group of like minded people, such as a support group for people with various problems or addictions, or a community group that is working on an important cause. Taking classes in something you find interesting or volunteering are more ways to find people who can become your friends.
