Do you sometimes have difficulty knowing how to make new friends? People who don’t have very many friends, or who have difficulty in creating new friendships, often ask, “Where can I meet new people? How can I turn acquaintances into friends?”
Most of us encounter many new people every day; but we don’t think of these people we meet in our lives as a possible source of new friendship. If you want to make new friends, you will have to try some new behaviors. In the article below written by author Linda Perry, you can discover some ideas that will help you discover new places where you can start to make friends.
A very obvious place to meet new friends is among the people we encounter on a regular basis. That means, we can start to create closer relationships with the people who are already our neighbors, people we might meet at school or at work, and people we meet at church. When you have already met someone once or twice, even in passing, it can become easier to start up a conversation with them.
In addition, there are many clubs and organizations you can join, based on the interests you already have. When you join an organization based on one of your interests, such as a sport or a hobby, you will find it much easier to start discussions with the other people in the group, because they will also share your passion.
If you want to make new friends, you have to keep on trying to interact with the people who are all around you. You don’t need to interact with all of them of course. Not all of them are going to be good friendship material. Some of the people may even be dangerous. But, in general, the friendlier you are to the people you encounter, the more likely some of them will be compatible with you.
Start with the belief that potential new friends are everywhere.

How to Make New Friends 101
By : Linda A. Perry
A friend used to be a stranger to you. Remember when you met your first friend? You did not know them. They were a stranger to you, but yet, now they are your friend.
And there are so many other ways that you can meet new friends. You probably have your own ways but this article will give you new ideas.
Find friends here:
- At school
- At work
- At your neighbors
- At family gatherings, some people bring friends to family gatherings
- At organizations such as boy scouts, girl scouts and outward bound -- if you are a child or teen, these are great places for beginning.
- At church or at church socials
- At community happenings
- At the MD, MS or other walks. Every year, large cities have walks for special causes. Thousands of helpful, thoughtful people arrive and walk for the cause
- On vacation. Yes, you can meet new friends on vacation.
So look around and know that you can reach and make new friends almost anywhere.
Places to STAY away from when seeking new friends:
- Bars -- Why do you want to meet someone who is drinking or spending their time inside a bar? Try restaurants instead. At least some people are there for the food.
- Strip clubs -- no explanation needed. Unless you plan to spend your life watching strippers, then meeting new friends at strip clubs is a bad move.
- Psychiatric institutions -- This would not be your ideal meeting place. Yet, many do not even realize that. Years ago, I heard a story about a woman who was having many serious problems with her boyfriend. And when I asked where she met him, she replied , "in a psychiatric hospital". If you meet a new friend in a psychiatric hospital, you have to know that you are meeting someone with serious psychiatric problems. You can be cordial, polite and professional with these people but you need to let them have their space and time to heal and not jump into any serious friendship with any of them. There will be time for them to meet "outside " friends once they are healed.
- The Morgue -- Unless you are in the business, you really do not want to make friends in the morgue or at funeral homes. The reasons are obvious.
- At any illegal proceedings. Any friends that you meet at any illegal proceedings--what are you doing there anyway? will not be true, lasting friends. That is just a guess, but a good guess. After all if they are involved in something illegal , what kind of a good friend is that?
- Places that promote hate -- We have all seen them, those places, clubs and organizations that promote hate. These are no places to meet good friends. An example of a place that promotes hate would be the KKK or any other groups that hate individuals or groups of people. If you meet new friends at places like this, then you will be bringing hate into your life instead of bringing joy , peacefulness, contentment and love into your life.
Those are just some ideas about where to make friends and where to NOT meet new friends.
