Make Lasting Friends Online
By: Kerri Glenton
It just seems like the world continues to spin faster and faster without any indication of it slowing down any time soon. In a world filled with road rage, spousal abuse, stalkers, and a host of other social ills, it can be intimidating to think about going out there and trying to establish a relationship or even become friends with people you don't know.
It is true that work, school, and church used to be the common places to meet people. This is true because these social venues offer people a chance to get to know one another in a way that is not possible on the bar or club scene. However, due to increased problems with sexual harassment, work has ceased being a viable option for many.
School, in particular college, remains one of the most likely places for two people to become friends or establish a relationship. However, balancing the high demands of coursework along with the stresses that go along with a relationship can be demanding.
Due to the high pressure placed upon young adults to succeed in their careers, the importance of friendship and relationships has diminished considerably.
Church has also ceased being a good place to meet people if for no other reason than the fact that so few people are attending on a regular basis. This is especially true for young adults so there remains few options for meeting people in a relatively safe manner and having the possibility of establishing a relationship.
As in all other fields, the Internet offers the best solution to the problem of finding a safe and congenial meeting place. It is one of the best ways to talk with like-minded people and find someone to make a connection with.
Regardless of a certain stigma attached to meeting people online, there is no denying the fact that there are literally millions of people out there using cyberspace hoping to make a connection.
You can find a number of services online where you can make your profile and get to meet people with whom you share interests and tastes. These sites usually charge money for their service. Therefore, you must opt for the website portal that has been around for sometime, has a large membership base so that you find as many like-minded people as you can and thus increase your odds of making a connection.
Sites like Yahoo offer free service for chatting only. There are always thousands of people chatting on its site throughout the day and night!
In addition, Yahoo even offers chatting rooms that cater to individual states and regions. This increases the probability of meeting someone within your area. Of course, you may not be able to make any long lasting connections, but you will certainly have a good time communicating with new people instead of just changing channels on the television.
Hopping online is definitely a lot different than going out to dinner or a movie. For one, it allows you and another person to have an intimate conversation and actually have some time to get to know one another.
Of course, there is always the risk of spending your time chatting with some 12-year-old pretending to be someone else, but compared with the alternatives, it remains a safe and effective way of meeting friends and potentially establishing a relationship.
