Today, there are a lot of new ways to make new friends on line.  Every day there seem to be more friendship sites and more social networking sites on the Internet.

For many thousands of years, there was basically one way to make friends.  You had to pick and choose your friends from the people who lived around you.

If you lived in a tiny village, you might not have many people to choose from.  Still, when you would see the same people in your village, day after day, you would eventually end up talking to all of them.  Some of them would probably become your friends, because you couldn’t be too choosy.

With the Internet, you can now more easily discover people all over the world who share the same interests as you do.  Or, you might meet someone in your own city that you might never have come across without using the Internet.

Still, there are also some drawbacks in using the Internet to meet new people.  One drawback is that you will probably never meet most of your on-line friends in real life.

Another drawback is that many people tell lies about themselves on the Internet. You can’t really trust everything your online friends are telling you.

Another problem with Internet friendships is that even when you seem to have a lot in common with somebody you meet online, you can’t predict whether you would actually like each other in person.
