Do you want to learn an important secret that can improve all of your relationships?  Very often the reason why our relationships run in to trouble is because we don’t really make the effort to truly listen to the person we are talking with.

Relationship experts stress over and over again that if you want to improve your relationships, you must improve your listening skills. Good listening skills are needed whether we are just making casual conversation with someone at a bus stop, or whether we are talking to a close friend we have known for many years.

No matter what kind of relationship we’re talking about, improving our listening skills will improve our ability to have truly satisfying relationships.  Good listening skills are needed whether we are living with our partner of twenty years, or if we are simply dating someone we want to know better.

Good listening skills will help you whether you are talking with your best friend since childhood, or just chatting with a new person you’ve just met at a party.

Many of us think that we already have good listening skills, but in many cases we are simply kidding ourselves.  Instead of really listening to what the other person wants to tell us, we often already have our minds made up.  We don’t really hear the other person when they are talking to us.

Listening takes more than open ears.  Listening requires an open heart.

When we are just waiting for the chance to prove that we are right and the other person is wrong, we cannot really listen.  We cannot really hear the other person’s message.

When we don't really listen with our hearts, we can't really communicate. 

Communication requires a sender and a receiver.  If a receiver is missing, then no communication can take place. 

If only one side is talking and nobody is listening, it's just a matter of time before the dialogue ends completely.

As human beings, we are often so self centered.  We can very easily get carried away thinking how important our own point of view is.  We can be completely convinced that our point of view is right and the other person's point of view is wrong.

When this happens, we forget there are two people in this relationship.  And the other person wants to be heard too.

Truly listening to another person requires our heart to be open.  We cannot already have our mind made up.  We have to be vulnerable, be willing to change our minds, and admit when we are wrong.

No wonder it seems easier to just keep talking.  If we really listened, we might have to change.
