For some of us, making conversation with other people is the easiest thing in the world.
For others, especially for those of us who are extremely shy or socially anxious, nothing is more terrifying than the idea of trying to make small talk conversations with other people.
In fact, some of us are so extremely shy and we get so tongue-tied that we can’t think up anything to say even when we are talking with people that we have known for years.
If you’re socially anxious, you may wonder how it is possible for other people to easily chat up strangers and think of dozens of things to say. If you feel terrified and your mind goes blank whenever you have to make conversation with other people, you probably spend a lot of time wondering what in the world is wrong with you.
And you probably feel lonely a lot, and left out of social situations.
Extreme shyness and social anxiety can cripple a person socially and professionally. Since making small talk is an important step in the process of making conversation and getting to know other people better, a person who experiences a lot of anxiety when making small talk may not be able to make social connections with other people. This can lead to a lifetime of desperate loneliness.
Psychologists and therapists don’t yet understand everything about shyness and social anxiety disorders. That’s because psychologists and psychiatrists only started investigating these conditions fairly recently. They are still trying to understand which forms of therapy work best for people who have social anxiety or extreme shyness.
At the present time, it seems that cognitive therapy and behavioural therapy offer two good approaches for treating this condition. In addition, some very socially anxious people benefit from taking medications prescribed for this condition.
Whether or not medication is used to lessen the effects of shyness, all shy people will benefit from practicing their social skills in friendly settings.
