Social Skills and the 5 Keys to Winning Friends

Not everyone has good social skills, and. Many of us can use improvement in this area. The main factor in improving social skills is that you must genuinely desire to relate in a more successful way to other human beings.
When you have better social skills, your relationships in general will be much more satisfying. Your network of friends and caring companions will expand. More people will genuinely care about you.
The world becomes a mirror of our attitudes and perceptions.
In the following article the author Peter Murphy gives you more tips on how you can improve your social skills.
If you take steps to improve your social skills, you will be much less frustrated in your life. You will experience the world in a different way. You will experience others as more caring people who are easy to get along with, if you yourself become a person who is caring and easy to get along with.
On the other hand, if you are difficult to talk with and to communicate with, all your relationships are likely to be highly frustrating. If you don’t bother to interact with others in a friendly way, you will make the assumption that the world is filled with uncaring people.
So, what can we do to improve our social skills? Improving social skills is a lifelong journey. Even though some of us are much better than others in the area of having relationship skills, nobody is perfect all the time. To some degree, everyone can keep improving their social skills.
We are not mind readers, so we will always make mistakes in how we interpret what others are doing or what they want from us. When we make mistakes, then we can become frustrated or even suspicious about others.
Remember too, that the people around you are not mind readers. So if you can’t express yourself calmly and completely, they will misunderstand your message. Then when they don’t understand you, you may find yourself getting angry and frustrated, and your relationships may become very unhappy for everyone involved.
Another reason why we will never become truly perfect in our communication is that every human being on this planet is the center of their own universe. We each have our own way of perceiving what is important.
We don’t always know how to balance our own needs against the needs of those around us. We are always changing what we need and want, at the same time that other people around us are changing too. But that is human nature.
And that is why our interactions with other people can never be perfect.
Still, it is worth trying to learn to become better in our relationships, and in our communications.

Social Skills and the 5 Keys to Winning Friends
By Peter Murphy
Having good social skills is very important. You interact with people throughout your day and being able to do so skillfully will help you.
Not only in a work environment where social skills allow you to build your business, but also on a personal level where you gain friends through your people skills.
Knowing the basics will help you to build good people skills that can make you successful in building good relationships.
Social skills means the way you interact with other people. It includes the way you talk, your body language and how you treat others in general.
We start building our social skills at birth. We learn how to talk, how to react in certain situations and how to act towards others by what we learn from those around us.
If you have problems with your people skills it is easiest to fix them by looking at the basics.
1. Learn to stay calm.
You should not be nervous or worried during your social interactions. This only leads to mistakes and others seeing you as being aloof. You can also focus more on others and the conversation if you are calm.
2. Watch your body language.
Much of our conversation is based on body language. You can make others feel uncomfortable with your body language or you can make them feel at ease. Body language includes your hand gestures and facial expressions as well, so watch out for fidgeting or weird facial movements.
3. Learn to be interested in others.
This comes naturally to most people, but for others, focusing on someone else can be hard. If you make eye contact and listen to others you will learn how to focus on them and not other things around you.
You will come across as genuinely being interested in others and people tend to enjoy interacting with someone who cares.
4. Look at how you use your social skills.
Before trying to change you should take a look at how you interact now. See what seems to be wrong so you know exactly what to work on.
5. Work on your general conversation skills.
You may need to brush up your communication skills if you find you have problems just carrying on a conversation. You should look at good conversation starters, how to handle others during a conversation, body language skills and small talk skills. Knowing how to be a good conversationalist will help your social skills immensely.
These five points cover the basics of people skills that everyone should know. If you go through and learn all five you should be able to tackle any problems you have with social skills.
