Brain Diet : Right Diet Prevents Memory Loss

Have you ever wanted to know what you can do to keep your brain healthy for a lifetime? A healthy lifestyle to protect the brain includes such factors as getting good physical exercise, sleeping well, reducing stress, and watching what we eat.

Some fascinating research on aging and the brain was conducted by David Snowdon at the University of Kentucky .  David Snowdon closely studied a group of nuns over a period of several decades to try discover which factors were associated with a healthy brain in old age.  He reported his results in his book:  Aging With Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives

David Snowdon discovered many fascinating insights about which factors seem to help the brain stay healthy.  He discovered for example that those nuns who ate foods containing lots of antioxidants had a better chance of living independently in their old age. 

Those nuns who had done a lot of studying throughout their lives were more likely to reach old age with their minds working well.  Having a series of small strokes seemed to increase the likelihood of dementia appearing.

Dr. Snowdon also discovered that a higher intake of the B vitamin Folic acid was associated with a lower risk of dementia in later years.  

Other researchers have noticed the fact that people in India have a very low rate of Alzheimer’s Disease.  These researchers suspect that the reason why people living in India have such a low rat of Alzheimer’s is because they use a lot of the cooking spice turmeric, which has very strong anti-inflammatory properties.  Since inflammation is believed to be one of the factors that leads to damaged brain cells, the action of curcumin may help to protect against the deterioration of memory.

In other studies, experiments conducted with aging rats have shown that those rats fed a diet high in blueberries were able to show a reversal of brain damage due to aging.  In fact, blueberries seemed to improve their brain power so much that they behaved like much younger rats.  Blueberries are an excellent source of potent antioxidants.

These days, when people have become so conscious about what they eat and how it affects their body, they don't realize that eating some foods can help their brain and make it more healthy. According to some studies, the right diet can help prevent memory loss.

Here is how it works:

As the brain ages, it gets more prone to inflammation and oxidation which allows damaging free radicals to attach themselves to cells. As a result, inflammation kills brain cells which in turn is responsible for memory loss.

Scientists have proven the fact that right diet increases the immunity of the brain towards inflammation and oxidation. Also it helps brain cells to communicate between each other more easily.  One important area of research in this subject is the role of antioxidants, the potent chemicals in plant foods that protect against free radicals which are responsible for damaging brain cells.

Food with high value powerful antioxidants are just the right diet for your brain. Many fruits and vegetables occupy their respective space in this prime list. Antioxidants, not only slow oxidation but also act as anti-inflammatory agents, serving a dual purpose. Hence they make the brain less vulnerable to amyloid plaque. Also they improve communication between neurons and allow the brain to regenerate.

Curcumin which is a spice known for its anti-inflammatory effects helps a lot in preventing memory loss. Curcumin is basically that spice which gives yellow curry its bright color and is frequently used as natural food dye.

Vitamins B such as niacin and folic acid are vitally important to brain function and help keep the mind sharp.
